Abstract
In the expectation-maximization REML algorithm, the trace function is the most computationally intensive operation, because it involves the inverse of the coefficient matrix of the mixed model equations. In the animal model contributions to the trace function from animals without records are all constant. Consequently, the part of the inverse and trace corresponding to these animals need not be computed.
