Abstract

This special edition of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences is dedicated to Professor Raj Suryanarayanan (Professor and William & Mildred Peters Endowed Chair, University of Minnesota, School of Pharmacy) and honors his extensive and distinguished career as a scientist, educator and mentor. The goal of this commentary is to provide an overview of Professor Suryanarayanan's noteworthy career path and summarize his key research contributions. The commentary concludes with the personal summaries by guest editors.

Professor Sury authored over 200 research papers and book chapters. He holds the Williams and Mildred Peters Endowed Chair in the College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota. He is a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical companies and was a member of the USP Expert Committee (Excipients test methods). He is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and is a past chair of the Teachers of Pharmaceutics Section of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Professor Sury is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Minnesota. He is recipient of a number of awards, the notable ones being the Outstanding Educator Award from AAPS, the David Grant Research Achievement Award in Physical Pharmacy, the PhRMA (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America) Foundation Award, Ralph Shangraw Memorial Award from the International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council of the Americas (IPEC-Americas) Foundation and Michael J. Pikal Distinguished Scholar Award in Pharmaceutical Processing by the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology & Education (NIPTE). He is an Associate Editor of Molecular Pharmaceutics.
