Abstract
Prevalence is the proportion or percentage of cases of disease in a population at a particular point in time. Prevalence is often confused or used interchangeably with the term incidence. However, incidence is the rate of new cases of disease over a period of time in a specified population. Although prevalence estimations are often challenged in wildlife and primate studies by incomplete population data and lack of validated screening tests, prevalence is an important measure for evaluating population-level disease impacts and risks.
