Describes an initial experimental study of a vehicle emission control system which is designed to meet 1975 exhaust emission standards and at the same time provide the ooperator with a positive psychological incentive to keep the system operative. The system consists of a conventional six-cylinder engine equipped with a rich thermal reactor and turbosupercharger combination. The engine horsepower output is markedly increased when the thermal reactor is operating, e. g. , about 30 percent more power at 30 mph in top gear. Steady-state road load exhaust emission and fuel consumption data are presented for a variety of air-fuel ratios and for two different spark advance setting. A discussion of development difficulties and plans for further studies are also presented.
