Abstract

Predicted and observed mean square values of turbulent velocity fluctuations and turbulent diffusion coefficients were obtained for a pilot scale detention pond. Predicted values were obtained using three simple models based on assumed vertical and transverse velocity profiles. These assumptions greatly idealize flow patterns in ponds. The accuracy of each of the three models was evaluated using turbulent flow data gathered with a constant temperature anemometer system. Overall, none of the models accurately predicted the observed values for all flow rates and site locations. Nevertheless, the models were still superior to previous work and may be adequate when pond performance is insensitive to predicted turbulent values. (A)
