Abstract

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems are analyzed at 10 and 20 Gbit/s with precompensation of each channel to minimize dispersion and nonlinear effects. Precompensation reduced accumulation of dispersion and also mitigated nonlinear effects. Optimal conditions were determined for both conventional and dispersion-managed WDM systems to significantly increase the obtainable transmission distance.
