Abstract
Rat plasma cholinesterase and arylamidase were used as models for studying pethidine-induced desensitization. Evidence is presented to support the view that prolonged pethidine treatment brings about desensitization to the initial drug action and this desensitized state persists even after eight days of withdrawal. It is suggested that these enzymes may constitute convenient target systems for studying opiate tolerance.
