N2 - Existing research raises significant questions regarding the conceptual equivalence of standardized personality assessment instruments with American Indians and Alaska Natives. Standardized assessment research with American Indian and Alaska Native people is reviewed and methodologically critiqued. Alternatives to current practice are explored through review of recent research on the construct equivalence of depression, current research on cultural identification, and use of picture story tests with American Indians. Finally, selected issues relevant to culturally appropriate assessment service delivery style for Indian and Native people are discussed.
