Abstract
This is a prospective longitudinal study of the histopathological changes of the oval and round windows in otitis media, performed with the intention of evaluating the role of the windows in the pathogenesis of the pathology of the labyrinth. 24 animals were studied, in different stages (from 1 day to 6 mth), using obstruction of the Eustachian tube as a method to produce otitis. In spite of the generalized reaction in the mucoperiostium of the middle ear, the oval window remained intact in all stages. The round window suffered gradual changes in all stages and, in the majority of cases, serofibrinous precipitate was found in the labyrinth immediately median to the round window. This window seems to be the most probable route of the pathological changes found in the internal ear which are secondary to otitis media.
