Abstract
Estimating the modulation index of an FM signal in stationary additive noise is encountered in many applications. We propose here a simple scheme which relies on the cyclo-stationarity of the FM process, and employs relevant cyclic statistics. Large sample variance expression of the modulation index estimator is also derived. Numerical examples corroborate the theoretical results.
