Abstract
1. 1. The cost of locomotion by 5 elk calves (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) was expressed by the following equations: M = 0.38 + 0.22 V on the level, M = 0.61 + 0.27 V on a 4.2° incline up, M = 0.45 + 0.20 V on a 4.2° incline down, M = 0.81 + 0.34 V and M = 0.46 + 0.15 V on 11.7° incline up and down correspondingly (M = ml O2/ghr, V = km/hr). 2. 2. The net cost of locomotion on the level for mammals was found to be S = 6.35 W-0.34 (S = ml O2/g km, W = weight in g). 3. 3. A method to compare the efficiency of moving on inclines for different animals is suggested.
