Abstract

The oxidation of Ru(dppe)(CO)3 with various o- and p-quinones is described. Reaction with 3,5-di-t-butyl-o-benzoquinone yielded a metallacyclic complex which crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 21.8388 (1), b = 12.0734 (1), c = 17.6173 (3) Å, β = 105.549 (1), and Z = 4. The complex exhibited slightly distorted octahedral geometry and contained a puckered metallacyclic ring resulting from the formal addition of the o-quinone moiety across the Ru-C bond of a metal carbonyl. Reaction of this quinone adduct with an alkylamine produced a known bis(carbamoyl) complex, Ru(dppe)(CO)2[C(O)NHR]2. The reaction of Ru(dppe)(CO)3 with p-quinones generated unidentified oxidation products which exhibited a similar reactivity with amines to form bis(carbamoyl) complexes.
