Abstract
INSECT yolk proteins, or vitellogenins, are synthesized and secreted by the fat body1-4, and are sequestered from the haemolymph by the developing oocytes5-7. Hormonal involvement in this process has been suggested by our work with the fat body of Aedes aegypti4,8, and we now report that a factor, produced by the ovary, acts directly on the fat body to activate and maintain synthesis.
