Abstract

Illustrated keys are provided to larvae of the families and genera of caddisflies (Trichoptera) occurring in the Neotropical region, including Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. This represents the first comprehensive key to larval stages of caddisflies for the region. However, knowledge of the fauna is still incompletely known. Of the 155 genera known from the region, occurring in 25 families, larval stages are not known for 41 genera, or 26% of the total. Of the 3280 species described to date, larvae are known for less than 10% of the species. This knowledge gap hinders the application of caddisfly larvae in programs to assess and monitor water quality, to study the ecological importance of this important component of aquatic ecosystems, and to document the biodiversity of the region.
