Oral delivery of LMW heparin via surface coated chitosan/PEG/alginate microspheres in Rabbits

Abstract

The feasibility of delivering LMWHep/heparin via surface coated Alg-chit-PEG microspheres in a rabit model was established. The main advantage with the use of LMWHep is the subcutaneous route of administration. A chitosan and cellulose Acetate Pathalate (CAP) coating were employed to increase the capsule strength flexibility and bioavailability of the drug following oral administration. It was observed that CAP coated LMWHep microspheres had inhibited factor Xa activity in rabbits when fed orally.
