Funding Information:
In 2005, HealthPartners Research Foundation, with the support of a conference grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), assembled a small group of researchers and clinicians from around the country to discuss how the health of individuals and populations might better benefit from science. As a result of this meeting and subsequent discussions, four principles for success were identified: (1) the needs of patients and populations determine the research agenda; (2) the research agenda addresses contextual and implementation issues including the development of delivery and accountability systems; (3) the research agenda determines the research methodologies rather than methodologies determining the research agenda; and (4) researchers and clinicians collaborate to define the research agenda, allocate resources and implement the findings.
