Abstract

An autoclave cure model, designated OPTIMIZER, has been developed which provides the optimum cure cycle for laminated composite plates. The cure cycle is optimized based on resin reaction kinetics, laminate compaction, and minimum cure cycle time criteria. The foundation of the model is a rule based expert system which has been successfully used as a real time closed loop autoclave controller. The expert system controller is designed to achieve a fully compacted laminate in the shortest cure cycle time. The temperature gradient within the laminate is closely monitored to prohibit an exotherm. The unique approach allows manufacturers to determine the minimum processing time for both thick and thin laminates without sacrificing part quality.
