Optical scattering power of a carious lesion: 1-D approach comparing Kubelka-Munk method to Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract

A study was carried out to develop a new measure of scattering power (Sp) of white spot lesion (WSL). The basic approach proceeded from an understanding of scattering properties of the lesion tissue. The experiments were conducted through a 1-D optical setup using a series of enamel slabs and partially demineralized slabs. Both Kubelka-Munk theory and Monte Carlo simulation were formulated in parallel with experiments to compute Sp of a lesion layer. New measures of Sp, predicted from both methods, were found to be a good estimate of lesion severity.
