Abstract
This article provides an overview of the controversy surrounding openness in adoptions practice and discusses the open options which many adoption agencies are currently offering adoptive and birth parents. The findings of an exploratory study which examine the impact of traditional, semi-open and fully-disclosed adoptions on adoptive and birth parents are presented. The risks and benefits of each type of adoption are described and policy and practice implications are discussed.
