Summary. An exact method for the solution of the inverse problem in plane wave propagation modelled after the Gelfand‐Levitan technique is reviewed and refined. A numerical scheme for the solution of the integral equation that arises in the method is proposed. A discussion on the stability and an error analysis of the numerical approximation are presented. The applicability of the inversion algorithm is demonstrated in a numerical experiment.
