Abstract
A description of a mathematical model to simulate the countercurrent nonuniform flow of gaseous and solid materials through an iron blast furnace is presented. A cylindrically symmetric region is assumed, together with solids moving down through the furnace under potential flow. The gases move according to the Navier-Stokes equations modified to account for the significant resistance to flow accorded by the packed bed structure of the solids material. Inert heat exchange is assumed between the descending solids and rising hot gases. The softening and melting of the ore in the solids ore:coke matrix is dubbed the cohesive zone. It is observed operationally that the shape of the cohesive zone has a significant impact on the blast furnace process.
