Abstract
This study investigates the temperature dependence of piezoelectric properties in (Na 1/2Bi 1/2)TiO 3 - (K 1/2Bi 1/2)TiO 3 (NBT-KBT), (Na 1/2Bi 1/2)TiO 3 - BaTiO 3 (NBT-BT) and (Na 0.5K 0.5NbO 3 (KNN) solid solutions. It was found that the anti-ferroelectric transition temperature in NBT-BT and NBT-KBT solid solutions is in the range of 85 - 120 °C. The piezoelectric properties in the anti-ferroelectric phase disappear. However, rare-earth oxide modified (Na 0.5K 0.5)NbO 3 exhibits linear piezoelectric properties until 180 °C where it goes through orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition which is of first order. At room temperature and under low field condition, (Na 0.5K 0.5)NbO 3 provides d 33 of 140 pC/N, K p of 44% and Q m of 200; 0.80(Na 1/2Bi 1/2)TiO 3 - 0.18(K 1/2Bi 1/2)TiO 3 - 0.02BiScO 3 exhibits d 33 of 145 pC/N, K p of 25% and Q m of 150, and (Na 0.88Li 0.12)NbO 3 shows d 33 of 30 pC/N, K p of 17% and Q m of 3200. The processing and annealing conditions, which affect the properties of the alkali materials, are also investigated. Based on these studies it was concluded that nonlead (Na 0.5K 0.5)NbO 3 system has a high possibility of being used for actuator and transducer applications.
