Abstract

A general account is given of the possibilities of more extensive cultivation of Zizania aquatica. Strains from the Great Lakes region of North America with grains 0.5-1.5 in long are particularly suited to cultivation as a food crop. Major problems in varietal improvement include the dormancy requirements of the grain (a subaquatic resting period) and self sterility.
