Abstract

A number of university hospital centers are participating in the pilot of a national computerized clinical data bank for traumatic coma. Patient data including history, symptoms, treatment, and outcome are collected prospectively during the patient care and follow up process according to common definitions. The data bank was implemented to demonstrate its usefulness for clinical research and patient management. To achieve these goals, a clinical data bank requires research methodology and computer technology linked with the needs of the patient environment. A description is given of the research design, the implementation, and the computer system of the Traumatic Coma Data Bank, which began in 1979.
