In the study described in this article, staff stated they felt more comfortable with objectives, not only for the unit (department) but particularly for themselves. They also said that they enjoyed the opportunity to discuss matters openly on a one to one basis with the head nurse. Overall, this gives a feeling of security, yet allows for creativity, risk taking, responsibility and accountability. Staff are motivated positively toward growth and development to the benefit of everyone concerned. The employer is further assisted by more adequately being able to delegate responsibility. Feedback is a crucial element in this program. There is an absolute necessity for frequent consultations, informal discussions and appraisals of goals established.
