Abstract
A method to determine the monopole and dipole magnetic moment, for a magnetic force microscope (MFM) tip was presented. The method was based on imaging a superparamagnetic film and fitting the observations to the calculated tip-sample interaction energy derivatives. The value of the magnetic field at the apex of a commercial MFM tip was found to be 40 kA/m. The experimental results were compared with the calculation of the response of the MFM tip due to the interactions with the magnetization of a superparamagnetic film, using a simple model.
