N2 - Infection with molluscum contagiosum virus causes a benign cutaneous viral disease of smooth surfaced, umbilicated papules. In the adult the lesions are characteristically distributed in the genital and perigenital areas, suggesting that contagion occurs via sexual intercourse. Individual lesions occasionally become inflamed following trauma and, if so, are easily mistaken for bacterial furuncles. Treatment of molluscum contagiosum consists of incision of the lesion followed by curettage of the centrally located mass of virally infected epidermal cells.
