N2 - The activation and selective conversion of light alkanes to aromatics and hydrogen is a well-studied value-adding process. ZSM-5-based catalysts are typically used because of their high resistance to deactivation. Gallium is added to enhance the dehydrogenation function. This system was chosen as a testbed for Discovery Informatics, the strategy for iterative model building and catalyst design. Ga-modified materials were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. Kinetic evaluation of the catalytsts was done with a pure propane feed at W/F = 0-30 gm-cat hr/mole at 520°-550°C and 1 atm. The Ga catalysts were regenerated in H2. Quantitative modeling of HZSM-5 and Ga/HZSM-5 that has focused on the kinetic parameters associated with Brønsted acid sites in HZSM-5, the chemical role of gallium and the associated kinetic parameters, and the optimal gallium content in modified HZSM-5 catalysts was presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 229th ACS National Meeting (San Diego, CA 3/13-17/2005).
