Abstract

Gait and balance disorders are common causes of injury, disability, and diminished quality of life. A major consequence of gait and balance impairment is falls. There are many causes and risk factors for gait and balance disorders as well as falls. Some of these are potentially modifiable risk factors. Specific urologic conditions such as urinary incontinence and nocturia have been associated with the risk of falling. This chapter reviews the incidence and risk factors for gait impairment and falls in older adults as well as the assessment of gait and balance and evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of falls.
