Abstract
Responding to the research question: Why is the middle school concept not more widely explored as a means of supporting marginalized students, we make three interrelated arguments. First, the middle school concept has missed many opportunities for insurrection. Second, the middle school concept has yet to embrace and respond fully and explicitly to the fluid, multiple, and intersectional nature of human experience. Third, it may just be important to focus less on the middle school concept writ large and focus more on what can be learned directly from young adolescents and adults who live and/or work in communities comprised primarily of marginalized students.
