Abstract

This paper is concerned with rockbursts in cut and fill mining of a thin, vertical vein at great depth. The design procedure used to plan extraction sequences in such deposits is based on minimizing the maximum spatial rate of energy release associated with mining. This procedure is used routinely in South Africa to plan deep mine workings. It is particularly simple to apply with the aid of an electrical resistance network analog, is which may be used to compute the stress, displacement and energy changes due to mining. The energy release rate design procedure is described, and an application of the method to the design of extraction sequences at the Star Mine in the Coeur d'Alene district is presented.
