This project developed a low-cost microprocessor-controlled, abnormal event recorder for secondary power distribution systems. The device monitors critical secondary distribution loads at all times recording voltage, current, and frequency. In the event of an abnormal or fault condition the device saves the recorded data for an interval of one or two seconds before and after the transient. The system hardware consists of a controller microprocessor (Z80) and six microprocessor (Z80) controlled analog-to-digital converters. The 8-bit A/D converters can sample either voltage or current at a 10 kHz sampling rate. They can also detect transient conditions and record the prespecified amount of data. The A/D converter units notify the controller of the transient condition.
