Abstract

The paper reports on a problem related to microbiologic contamination of liquid bicarbonate concentrate (LBC). High levels of bacterial and endotoxin contamination of LBC have been observed in commercially available LBC as well as in LBC prepared on site from commercially available powder. Bacterial contamination of commercially supplied LBC has been noted despite the labeling of the LBC as bacteriostatic. Standard microbiologic techniques used for water and dialysate underestimate the level of contamination, thus obscuring the magnitude of the problem.
