MICRO-COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY AND STRUCTURED LIGHT SCANNING OF HUMAN HEARTS PRESENTING WITH ISCHEMIC CARDIOMYOPATHY OR ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: GENERATING “A HEART TO LEARN” MOBILE APPLICATION

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution

Abstract

Access to high-resolution imaging of human cardiac anatomy is essential for healthcare professionals, patients, medical device developers, students, and researchers. At the Visible Heart® Laboratories, we are developing innovative mobile applications, including our latest offering "A Heart to Learn" (AHTL). This mobile application aims to educate users on common cardiac pathophysiologies through the integration of micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and structured light scanning technologies. Available within the Apple App and Google Play Stores, to date, the app features seven digitally reconstructed human hearts, specifically highlighting conditions such as ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) and atrial fibrillation (AF). An Artec Space Spider structure light scanner (SS) was employed to capture the intricate details and challenging external anatomies for each heart; with resolution down to 0.1 mm and an accuracy of up to 0.05 mm. The utilized μ-CT scanning provided unparalleled imaging resolution with a voxel size of less than 0.1 mm, enabling the creation of detailed computational models representing tissue and blood volume for each heart. To enrich the learning experience, we also include de-identified patient histories, incorporating relevant and available echocardiography, ECG, and CT reports, along with external imaging and intracardiac endoscopic videos from reanimated hearts. This multifaceted approach allows users to explore and compare various specimens and conditions with a high level of precision, fostering unique views of cardiac pathologies.
