Abstract
There are now four studies that are consistent in their results which demonstrate the efficacy for neuroleptics used in a low-dose strategy for patients with schizotypal personality disorder alone or with borderline personality disorder. The trials are also consistent in demonstrating a significant drug effect for certain symptoms of psychosis and not for the diagnosis SPD. While the thrust of this paper has been to present, and by implication recommend, the use of low-dose neuroleptics in SPD patients, it should be noted that this area is in its infancy. Because all the studies to date are of a short-term nature, the potential for long-term side effects such as tardive dyskinesia were not addressed. The potential risk of these side effects needs to be considered alongside the potential benefits when neuroleptics are used clinically.
