## Abstract

This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm developed for the adequacy evaluation of bulk power transmission systems. The algorithm determines the generation dispatch, phase shifter settings, and load curtailment (if any) required to alleviate transmission system overloads resulting from generation and transmission contingencies. The algorithm developed, employs an iterative-constraint-search procedure to deal with the line flow constraints and employs sparsity techniques to exploit the sparse characteristics of bulk power networks, and thus can be used to solve large network problems efficiently. This computational efficiency allows the algorithm to be coupled with an automatic contingency selection technique to calculate indices which can be used to compare the adequacy of alternative bulk power supply system expansion plans. The algorithm has been applied to systems of up to 128 buses under a variety of contingency situations, with short computation times.
