Abstract
To the elderly person, admission to a nursing home usually symbolizes the end of self-responsibility and control over his or her environment. Learned helplessness and hopelessness may ensue, leaving the resident more vulnerable to illness. The authors describe an experiment in a nursing home and give concrete recommendations on how to offer residents choices and a sense of control to help alleviate this problem.
