The factorization method for systems of linear difference equations is shown to be related to the factorization method for differential equations via the Mellin transform. This connection allows one to extend Lie algebra representations in terms of difference operators to local group representations. The results yield a group-theoretic explanation and derivation of various integral identities which relate one type of special function to another.
