LEGITIMATING RESISTANCE: Empowering Pro-Democratic Journalism through Alternative News

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

What does an authoritative pro-democratic news media look like? While a decade of academic research has examined mis- or dis-information, polarization, and other ills, this chapter offers a plea to attend as much to attempts at protecting democracy as attempts at dismantling it. We theorize how best to uplift voices outside of authoritative spaces who advance pro-democratic narratives. Instead of seeing online news as antagonistic toward conventional “legacy” news, we must recognize how alternative media may provide a way forward to construct new forms of journalistic authority that are normatively grounded in serving democratic ends.
