Abstract

A method based on a sound physical method of the process and modern control theory to improve the control of lapping for hard disk drive heads is presented. The Preston model is identified as an accurate constitutive relationship relating lapping rate to pressure and relative velocity. A pressure estimation method is established based on the modified beam on elastic foundation model (MBOEF) to incorporate the effect of surface shape. Simulation is conducted based on the constitutive relationship and MBOEF. For control design, a lapping process model is constructed using the simulation model as a tool.
