Kinetics of the direct causticizing reaction between sodium carbonate and sodium tritltanate

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution

Abstract

The direct causticization kinetics of Na2CO3 by Na2O.3TiO2 has been determined in a novel reactor consisting of a stack of Al2O3 trays. The reaction rate is determined from the CO2 content of a carrier gas flowing over a thin layer of reaction mixture in each tray, and by continuous (buoyancy-corrected) weight loss measurement. The final conversion of Na2CO3 and the generation of NaOH after hydrolysis of the 4Na2O.5TiO 2 product is confirmed by titration. The kinetic measurements with the reactor system are validated by changing the carrier gas (N2 or He), flow rate and tray loading. The effect of temperature (675 to 750°C) on the kinetics is studied.
