Abstract

Thinning transitions were thermally induced by nucleating dislocation loops in overheated Sm-A films at temperatures below Tc (N). The rate of expansion of these transitions was determined. The speeds obtained as a function of film thickness and temperature showed qualitative agreement with the proposed model of a thinning transition. By examining the interaction between two simultaneously growing dislocation loops, evidence was obtained for and the effects of an interlayer shear viscosity.
