Abstract

In the introduction to a volume containing the final manuscript of foundational scholar-practitioner of international education Josef A. Mestenhauser (1925-2015), the authors provide a biographical summary of his life and career beginning in Czechoslovakia and spanning decades at the University of Minnesota. They describe their focus on his intellectual contributions, his sustained interest in systems theory, and the continuing relevance of his work. They introduce the organization of the volume, which includes reflections by colleagues in Minnesota as well as scholars whose work demonstrates his continuing influence on international higher education, illuminating pathways for inquiry and future practice.
