Irrigation Management in Vegetable Crops

Abstract

Vegetables are high-value crops which require careful water management to achieve optimal growth, quality, and yield. Irrigation is a key input in vegetable production as water deficits or surpluses can directly affect both yield and quality. Vegetable crops are typically shallow-rooted with high transpiration rates, thus cannot withstand water stress. Proper irrigation ensures that plants receive adequate water during critical growth stages such as germination, flowering, and fruit setting. Water deficits can lead to stunted growth, reduced leaf size, flower drop, and poor fruit and/or edible part development. Conversely, excessive irrigation can cause reduced yields, poor produce quality, and increased vulnerability to insect-pests and diseases. Further, excess of water can result in root decay, nutrient leaching, and increased pest and disease pressure. Vegetable crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, okra, and leafy vegetables have high water requirements, particularly during hot and dry growing seasons. This chapter explores irrigation management principles and practices for vegetable crops, focusing on methods to maximize water use efficiency while maintaining healthy crop growth. It also highlights different systems and methods of irrigating vegetable crops with their pros and cons and importance of irrigation scheduling.
