Introduction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The four chapters in this book look at biography in early modern East Asia from a variety of perspectives and raise a number of important questions. What do we mean by biography? Not only are the authors of these chapters interested in biography as a genre in early modern East Asia, but they are also interested in the ways that combing through a variety of sources enables them to write biographies of individuals (or groups of individuals) who lived in early modern East Asia. What we have at play in this volume is an examination both of biography as a genre in early modern East Asia and biography as a contemporary historical genre.
