Abstract
The Young's modulus of bone material is measured using both nanoindentation and microindentation probes. These methods are particularly applicable to the quantification of modulus for small specimens. The nanoindentation method measures intrinsic properties of bone mechanics at a submicron level which allows to effectively avoid the microstructure effect. The microindentation method measures the material properties in the region of 150 × 20 μm, which is applied to quantify the stiffness of a single trabecular in situ. The results of microindentation measurements serves as a comparison purpose for these of nanoindentation measurements.
