Abstract
The strain-induced austenite to martensite transformation may be used in a controlled way to design ultrahigh strength steels. The objective was to determine the influence of the strain-induced transformation on crack propagation characteristics in these steels. First, the detailed crack path was followed fractographically. It is shown that cracking first occurs in the martensite followed by tearing in the austenite.
