Abstract
The extent of interurethane hydrogen bondings is frequently used to study the degree of phase separation in segmented polyether-urethanes. A series of hard and soft segment model compounds were prepared to investigate the frequency band assignment for free or hydrogen bonded urethane carbonyls in the bulk materials. Highly crystalline hard segment model materials prepared from 4,4' diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and normal alcohols, have a high degree of interurethane hydrogen bands. Soft segment materials prepared from a hydroxyl terminated polyethylene oxide capped polypropyle-neoxide and MDI or phenylisocyanate have essentially no interurethane hydrogen bonding due to dilution in the polyether matrix.
