High resolution measurements of isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings for ytterbium using a CW tunable laser

Abstract

The hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of the 1S o-3P1 intercombination line of Yb I (5556 AA) have been measured by observing the resonant scattering of light from a CW tunable laser incident on a collimated atomic beam. Results for all the stable isotopes of Yb are reported with an accuracy of about +or-0.6 MHz (+or-0.02 mK). Improved relative isotope shifts are obtained and the hyperfine anomaly of 171,173Yb is also calculated.
