Abstract

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a disease defined by the presence of signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure in the setting of reduced systolic function by imaging (ejection fraction </= 35%). HFrEF is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, with 50% of patients dying within 5 years of diagnosis. Fortunately, there are a number of pharmacologic and device therapies available to treat HFrEF and ultimately improve survival. Additionally, lifestyle interventions such as low sodium diet, exercise, and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea may benefit this high-risk population.
